It officially became a town in 1848 but became a neighborhood when it was annexed in 1874.

The Freedom Trail
The Freedom Trail is a 2.5 mile tour of 16 Revolutionary War Sites. You can get a map for a self-guided tour or you can join one of the 90 minute tours led by an 18th Century costumed Freedom Trail Player. These tours start at the Arts Boston Booth at Faneuil Hall and the Commons Visitor information center. Some sites on the trail charge an additional entry fee. The trail begins at the Commons and ends at the Bunker Hill Memorial in Charlestown. Faneuil Hall Marketplace is located at 4 South Market Street. The Commons Visitor Information Center is located at 139 Tremont Street. Tour schedules can change to check to see the current schedule.
Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum
Visit the site of the Boston Tea Party. One hour tours are lead by an 18th Century host. You will join in a colonial town meeting and board a ship to dump the tea. Then, you can visit the museum. The ships and museum are located at 306 Congress Street. In-season hours are daily 9 am to 6 pm with tours starting every half hour from 10 am to 5 pm. Off-season hours are daily 9 am to 5 pm with tours starting every half hour from 10 am to 4 pm.
The Liberty Tree Site
The Liberty Tree Site is at 630 Washington Street by Essex Street, a block east of Boston Common and Boylston Station (Green Line). At the site, you will find a plaque marking the spot where the tree stood before it was cut down by English loyalists in 1775. On August 14, 1765, a group of Bostonians, who objected to the British Stamp Act chose this tree to hang effigies of men, who supported the passage of the Stamp Act. A copper plate was attached to the tree on September 11th, naming it The Tree of Liberty. This tree became a meeting place for the Sons of Liberty. A liberty pole was installed by the tree and a flag was raised to summon supporters to meetings.
The USS Constitution at the Charlestown Navy Yard
The USS Constitution, docked at the Navy Yard is the oldest commissioned vessel in the US Navy. It has three masts and a wooden hall, was named by President George Washington, and was launched in 1797. Her nickname of “Old Ironsides” was earned in the War of 1812. She was retired from service in 1881 and became a museum ship in 1907. She has been out to sea three times since 1907. In 1934, she was taken on a three year tour of the nation. Then, in 1997, she was taken out for her 200th birthday. Finally, in 2012, she was sailed to commemorate her importance in the War of 1812. The museum is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. The ship is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.
While you are there, you can tour the Navy Yard also. The Navy Yard repaired and resupplied ships from 1800 to 1974. The Navy Yard is open 24 hours a day. The visitors center is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm.
